  • Align with your boss by: Understanding his/her vision, goals, pressures, and style and clarifying his/her expectations. The more detailed the better. Make sure to cover goals, resources, success measures, alliances
  • Identify a mentor who can help you navigate the politics and culture.
  • Be a student of the organization, your new team and department.
  • Remember that people resist change that comes from the top down and embrace what they can own.
  • Develop a plan that includes long and short term goals
  • Be seduced into playing the role of the "knight in shining armor"
  • Make early judgments about people based on hearsay or first impressions
  • Give people the impression that you have all the answers before you even get all the facts and input
  • Squander the very narrow window of opportunity to make a strong first impression
